Across the Southwest, you can hear the sounds of quail calling to each other as they mate, begin to build their nests, and lay their eggs.
There are three different species of quail found in California. The very popular and easy to recognize California Quail, Gambel's Quail like those pictured here, and Mountain Quail which are the largest type of quail in North America and are typically not found in the desert.
Gambel’s Quail are very gregarious birds. They gather to feed in coveys of approximately a dozen, along brushy washes and cactus-studded arroyos. Both males and females have a bobbing black topknot of feathers that looks like a comma on top of their head, as you can see in this wooden jigsaw puzzle. The male’s prominent black belly patch distinguishes it from the similar California Quail, and he tends to sport a more elongated, slender physique.
Like most desert dwelling quail, Gambels would rather run than fly. You can find them scurrying between plant cover or keeping a lookout on low shrubs. If they have to fly, they take off in a burst and don't go far. They scratch for food under shrubs and cacti, eating grasses and cactus fruits, and they love the hot deserts of the Southwest—the Sonoran, Mohave, and Chihuahuan—below about 5,500 feet elevation.
When adult quail mate, it is not just for a single breeding season. These birds mate for life and remain monogamous till death do them part. Both adults perform all parenting duties equally. They select nesting sites, incubate eggs and teach their young how to be quail together. They are truly the egalitarians of the bird world, so we've created them into a beautiful wooden jigsaw puzzle.
