Primavera (Spring) was likely commissioned as a wedding gift to a member of the powerful Medici family in 1492. The painting depicts a variety of characters from Roman mythology. Standing in the middle is the goddess of love, Venus, with her son Cupid flying above her. On the far left is the god Mercury waving away the Winter clouds. Next to him are the three feminine virtues: Chastity, Beauty, and Love. To the right of Venus is the goddess of flowers, Flora, who looks on as the nymph Chloris (an earlier incarnation of Flora) is abducted by the west wind, Zephyrus.
