"I'm a remarkable woman, always was, though none of you seemed to think so." – May Morris, 1936.
When May joined Morris & Co, she designed wallpaper, but at 23, she became Director of Morris & Co's embroidery department and expanded the business significantly. From 1885 to 1896, she was responsible for creating new patterns and designs for wallpapers and fabrics, supervising a team of needlewomen.
Throughout her life, May remained a committed socialist. In 1907, she co-founded the Women's Guild of Arts — no existing guild of the time would admit women — and campaigned to raise the professional status and bargaining power of women and girls working in arts and crafts.
