Alfons Maria Mucha, known internationally as Alphonse Mucha, was one of the most famous Art Nouveau painters, although being associated with that movement frustrated him no end. He asked at one point, "What is it, Art Nouveau? Art can never be new..." and took much more pride in his work as a history painter.
The Times of the Day series was painted in 1899 when Mucha was at the height of his career. These panels illustrate all the typical qualities of the Mucha painting – the beautiful women with suggestive gestures, the decorative use of flowers and flowing hair, the subtle yet striking colors. They all combine to create a compelling harmony of vision whose intention is to inspire and elevate the observer.
The eagle eyed among you will notice that the four tapestries are not exactly equal in length. This is not a mistake in the image, it is simply a fact that when the company produced the tapestries for Mucha they weren't really precise in the sizes they used, and as each image in the series was produced as a different tapestry, at different times, they are slightly off in their sizing.
