Radi Nedelchev typically paints scenes of his native Bulgaria. Mostly landscapes with small towns and scenes of village life, all full of color and character and a warm cozy feel.
Although training as an artist at that time in Bulgaria under communism was hard, Radi enrolled at the state art school in Rousse and began to make a name for himself.
This was a time in Bulgarian history when peasant conditions in the countryside were beginning to be transformed through the collectivization process, and many small villages were dying out. Radi began to paint them as a way to keep the old ways and traditions alive, and pass Bulgarian history on to the next generation.
In 1971 his art was discovered for the first time outside of Bulgaria. His work was awarded a prize for naive art at a worldwide competition in Switzerland and a series of exhibitions followed all over Europe.
Over the years he received many offers from benefactors to help him to leave Bulgaria and the restrictions of communism, but he chose to stay in his homeland.
